[03.) BLOG POST: Mold

 



This assignment took much longer than I expected it would. I just got so stuck on so many different levels but thankfully got some help and we figure it out it can be split into five parts for the top and I think it looks great I did rebuild it again just so it felt a little bit more closer to what I exactly wanted an I hope it goes well I did test it in Autodesk and it looks great I just didn't take any photos because I don't think I did it properly.

I actually redid this tutorial at the beginning of the semester just to refresh my brain  It was fun. It’s how I designed our first project This project was inspired by an art piece that I did two years ago. It was two dream catchers that were going into each other. I always reimagined doing this art piece just because a I felt like It didn’t get justice because of the gallery where the show was. ghosted us and now they’re closed because of embezzlement lol. I reimagined it as humungous Installation because everyone kept laying underneath this piece During the gallery show open. So I wanted to redesign it and maybe use this design for this model for new proposals for my next art show. I found this pattern and a tutorial on how to map a sphere and make lines in between them, and then I built piping onto the lines, combined them all, added some texture, and rendered it.

I thought it would be really great, but it took so long to design and I ran out of time with that one. And because my other assignment was failing, I realized I could still make a pot for the slip cast using the 3D printer instead.  My first attempt cracked at the bottom I believe this was because I touched it when it was still wet as well as as try to print the bottom instead of just clay at the bottom and then printing on top of the clay Second and third attempt came out way better   Then I experimented with the printer, seeing its capacity. Mold Positive Design

  I think I still struggle with understanding how molds work in general, but I am trying to get there. I think part of the problem is that I picked the wrong shape for something new to me. I probably should have picked a more simple or familiar shape first so I could understand the process better before trying something more difficult. This shape was very mentally challenging for me. At first, I was trying to make this a multi-part mold where the pieces would be put together, but I realized it just wasn’t working as one mold for the pot and didn’t really work at all. Because of that, I decided that the top piece of the pott would just sit on top of the bottom of the pott piece instead. I really try not to have any undercuts because I didn’t want any overhangs or areas that would get stuck in the mold.
